Saint Ciarán’s ‘shining city’ was once a great and bustling monastic centre. It dates to the mid sixth century AD, and is located at the ancient crossroads of Ireland, where the ancient routeway of the an Slí Mór meets the mighty River Shannon. The monastery quickly grew in power and prestige. Founded by a saint, and the resting place for Kings, chiefs and warriors of Ireland today Clonmacnoise peacefully slumbers alongside the River Shannon.
