Clonmacnoise is one of Ireland’s most iconic historical sites. The monastery was founded nearly 1500 years ago by Saint Ciarán in the middle of the sixth century. He would rise from humble origins to be one of the most famous and venerated of Ireland's saints. Clonmacnoise is located at the ancient crossroads of Ireland, where the ancient routeway of the an Slí Mór meets the mighty River Shannon, and this position helped the monastery grow in wealth and presitige.
